The Troy-Bilt Pony 42 is a practical, entry-level riding lawn mower built for homeowners who want reliable yard coverage without the premium price tag. Powered by a 547cc Troy-Bilt single-cylinder engine with electric start, it delivers consistent power across lawns up to 1.5 acres. The 42-inch twin-blade steel cutting deck offers five height adjustments ranging from 1.5 to 4 inches, allowing you to tailor the cut to your lawn’s needs. With an 18-inch turning radius and automatic headlights for low-light use, it handles everyday mowing tasks with practical ease.
Designed with the operator in mind, the Pony 42 features a Step-Thru frame that makes getting on and off the mower comfortable and effortless, even for older riders. The 7-speed Shift-on-the-Go transmission is controlled directly from the dash panel, letting you adjust speed without slowing down, with a top forward speed of 5.5 mph. A rear tow hitch adds versatility for light utility work, and the grit floor mats and cup holder add small but welcome conveniences to the riding experience.
For buyers on a budget looking to step up from push mowing, the Pony 42 covers the essentials at a competitive price point of $2,099. It now comes backed by a 3-year limited warranty covering the engine, frame, front axle, and deck shell, which adds meaningful peace of mind. While it is not built for heavy-duty commercial use or particularly rough terrain, owners who keep up with basic maintenance like seasonal oil changes, blade sharpening, and winterizing generally find it a capable and dependable machine for maintaining a standard residential lawn season after season.
